There is no doubt that 2017 was a big year for Hollywood movies not just globally but also in the Philippines. As you may have observed, some of the most anticipated and most watched movies shown in local cinemas for the past year were international releases.
In 2017, Disney was the biggest winner in the Philippine box office, as its offering Beauty and Beast generated ticket sales of over P672 million, based on estimates by online box-office reporting service Box Office Mojo and global movie industry data and research firm The Numbers. Warner Brothers’ Wonder Woman earned almost P527.8 million based on estimates.
In comparison, the highest grossing Filipino of all time, Beauty and the Bestie starring Vice Ganda and Coco Martin, grossed a combined P526 million worldwide from 2016 to 2017. Data about the local films that were shown in movie houses in the past year are yet to be released, though we do not expect any of those to challenge the figures earned by the top Hollywood films in local box office.
