The age of electric vehicles has finally come in the Philippines! In the recent 10th Philippine Electric Vehicle Summit held at SMX Convention Center in Pasay City, different EV manufacturers showcased their most impressive electric cars that are now available locally.
Among the most noteworthy exhibitors is the brand BYD, a Shenzhen, China-based electric car maker that offers EVs at very competitive prices these days. Thus, DHL Philippines is starting to have a fleet of EVs from BYD—the logistics firm now uses 3 EVs from BYD and has already ordered additional 13 units.
BYD is also proud to be described as the “Toyota of electric cars” in Europe and Australia these days. The EV maker manufactures electric cars that are much lighter compared to traditional cars because EVs don’t come with engines, only batteries that power them up.
To date, the brand sells two major EV models—BYD Tang and BYD Dolphin.
BYD Tang
Tang is the flagship model of BYD and is now already making impressions among auto buyers in the Philippines. It is a 2022 model and a pure EV (not a hybrid, which means it runs fully on electricity) at that. The 500km-range 4-wheel-drive vehicle is the first line of Tang, with an elegant exterior and interior design to wow car buyers.
One full charge of Tang, which lasts about 8 to 10 hours (82 kilowatts per hour), can power the EV to a distance of up to 500 kilometers. Every full charge will cost just around ₱500!
“Based on our tests, a common full tank of a conventional fuel-powered car costs around ₱3,500 to ₱4,000. Compare that to the full-charge cost of BYD Tang and you can easily realize the difference,” BYD Sales Executive Hector Pebenito told Tech and Lifestyle Journal.
“BYD Tang’s one full charge can go far (500 kilometers). For city use, charging may be needed every week or every other week,” he added.
Tang currently has an SRP of ₱3,998,000 and can be purchased under the usual auto financing schemes. It comes with a warranty of 5 years or 100,000 kilometers (whichever comes first).
BYD Dolphin
The more economical BYD Dolphin is categorized as a sedan but is actually a 5-seater hatchback. It comes with a 400km range and is a front-wheel drive. Just like Tang, this model is also a pure EV.
One full charge of Dolphin lasts about 6 to 8 hours (44.9-kilowatt hour) and can cost lower than ₱500. This EV logically comes with a smaller battery compared to Tang.
“BYD Dolphin is more affordable. It is actually the cheapest EV available in the country right now,” Pebenito revealed.
Dolphin has an SRP of ₱1,798,000 and can also be availed through financing. The warranty is the same as Tang’s.
Dolphin heralds the Sea of Ocean concept by BYD. In China, the brand has other popular models like BYD Sea Lion and BYD Seal (both are yet to be introduced locally).
