Google Doodle celebrates Comedy King Dolphy’s 92nd birth anniversary

Google Philippines is paying tribute to the late Rodolfo ‘Dolphy’ Quizon through a doodle, displayed in the search engine’s local site throughout the day (July 25, 2020). Dolphy, as Filipinos fondly call him, would have celebrated his 92nd birthday this day.

He is a comedian, actor, movie producer, and philanthropist. When he was alive, the local entertainment industry referred to him as the country’s King of Comedy, with charm and humor that warmed Filipino hearts, making him a household name for decades.

Dolphy began his interest in the performing arts when he was still a child, selling peanuts and watermelon seeds at movie theaters. Thus, he was able to watch movies on the big screen for free. The young Dolphy then started dreaming of becoming a part of the show business. He got his first small role in a film when he was 19. The years that followed were tumultuous and challenging, which he faced with hard work and determination. In the 1960s, things turned in his favor from his big TV debut through ‘Buhay Artista.’

The hit family sitcom ‘John ‘en Marsha’ cemented Dolphy’s legacy in the industry. The weekly TV series dominated Philippine TV in the 1970s and 1980s. At the same time, he produced nine spin-off films through his own production firm RVQ Productions. In the 1990s, Dolphy proved his enduring relevance when he again made waves through a new TV sitcom ‘Homg Along da Riles,’ aired over then ratings leader ABS-CBN.

Dolphy’s career lasted over six decades. He starred in more than 200 movies and several long-running TV shows. Not surprisingly, he emerged as among the pillars of the local entertainment industry. He founded Dolphy Aid Para sa Pinoy Foundation, which provided scholarships to children of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).

“Google Philippines is proud to showcase one of the country’s iconic entertainment personalities to the world,” said Google Philippines Head of Communications and Public Affairs Mervin Wenke. “Through this Google Doodle, we recognize and pay tribute to Dolphy’s remarkable talent and passion, which have made a significant impact in the local entertainment industry, bringing laughter to generations of Filipinos. We hope that today, everyone is reminded of Dolphy’s legacy and how he taught everyone to find joy in everyday life.”
