Lazada broke records during the Single’s Day sale event across Southeast Asia. According to the giant e-commerce firm, more than 6.5 million items were ordered by customers across Southeast Asia on the opening weekend of its Online Revolution Sale on November 11 (11.11).
Generating a total of US$123 million in gross merchandise value (GMV) on that day alone, Lazada’s annual pre-Christmas campaign posted a whopping 171% jump in sales compared to figures on the same day last year. More than 70% of all first-day orders were placed using mobile devices—a number that Lazada interprets as an indication that online shopping has become a personal habit for millions of individuals in the region.
Offering more products
“We aim to provide Southeast Asia’s rapidly growing middle-class the access to a wide range of products with deals and discounts that were previously available only abroad or in the capital cities,” said Lazada Group Chief Executive Officer Maximillian Bittner.
“We continue to work tirelessly with our brand partners, as well as local and international merchants, to provide consumers with the same shopping opportunities, no matter where they are based. With brand and cross border sales volumes 3 to 4 times of last year, I firmly believe that our differentiated value proposition of providing unique and accessible assortment continues to set us apart in the eyes of the region’s consumers,” Bittner added.
Sales figures in PH
Lazada’s Online Revolution Sale has again proven that it has built a strong shopping tradition among online shoppers in the Philippines. Now on its sixth year, the pre-holiday e-commerce campaign sold hundreds of thousands of items on November 11 alone. More than P550 million worth in savings were given away to Filipinos who made purchases that day.
Over half of Lazada customers who purchased that day were aged 32 years old and younger. The top-selling items included digital goods, mobile accessories, coffee, and makeup—reflecting the common interests of millennials whenever they do online shopping.
Moms’ online spree
Consumers from other demographics also accounted for a significant number of total shoppers on the first day of Online Revolution. About 19,000 to 20,000 packs of diapers were sold, matching the number of tablets sold that day. Lazada takes this as an indication that even moms actively shop online these days.
Lazada’s Online Revolution 2017 is still up until December 12 (12.12). Online shoppers could still possibly save up to 95% in purchases of select items that are with hefty markdown tags. The Grand Christmas Sale from December 7 to 12 promises to further offer greater deals.
