The adverse weather condition over the past weekend has prompted Pru Life UK to extend the inaugural virtual version of its Prudential RideLondon for another weekend. This cycling event was supposed to be held only on August 15 and 16, 2020. For those who missed it, the same event will be mounted again this coming weekend, August 22 and 23, 2020.
The virtual biking event gathered thousands of participants from across the country last weekend. Using the My Prudential RideLondon app, cyclists were able to track their ride and virtual position on a choice of four courses: 100 miles (161 kilometers), 46 miles (74 kilometers), 19 miles (31 kilometers), and FreeCycle. Cyclists can be anywhere in the country. The FreeCycle event is for those who don’t bike but can use self-propelled or stationary wheels.
Prudential RideLondon first took place in 2013 as a legacy event from the London 2012 Olympics and is sponsored by Pru Life UK’s parent company, Prudential plc. In its first seven years, it has become the world’s greatest festival of cycling, with up to 100,000 riders taking part each year. The event has been praised for inspiring hundreds of thousands of people to take up cycling and has raised a total of more than £77 million (P4.9 billion) for thousands of charities.
This year, Prudential RideLondon was originally scheduled to take place on August 15 to 16 in London. But because of the pandemic, the organizers decided to mount an online version for the first time (still synchronized with London time).
