SM Skating is upholding its commitment to provide support to Filipino ice athletes who join various competitions internationally. It is keeping its vow to continue helping develop skills and talents of aspiring young skaters, who dream of bringing more honor to the country by making it to winter Olympic games and other major ice tournaments worldwide.
This was reiterated by SM Lifestyle Entertainment, Inc (SMLEI), the operator of the ice skating rink, during the recent homecoming event organized for home-grown figure skater Michael Christian Martinez.
Martinez represented the Philippines in the recent 2018 Winter Olympics held in PyeongChang, South Korea. Although the 22-year-old athlete failed to advance in the sports event’s single figure skating competition, SM Skating rink still recognizes his efforts and the pride he brought to the country.
Inspiration to ice athletes
“We are grateful for the sacrifices made and the dedication shown by Michael Martinez in the just concluded winter Olympics,” said SMLEI Chief Operating Officer Emiliano Medina-Cue. “He has become not only a source of pride but also an inspiration especially for the budding ice athletes who, I believe, will carry our country’s colors in future international competitions.”
SMLEI takes pride in the fact that Martinez has been among the local ice skating professionals who learned and developed ice skating skills in SM Skating rinks. Martinez also acknowledges SM Skating’s support that helped him win a silver medal in the Southeast Asian Games in 2017.
Support for athletes
SMLEI has been actively supporting Filipino ice athletes by providing them a venue for trainings. Among the ice athletes that constantly train at SM Skating are figure skaters Alisson Perticheto, Jules Alpe, Sofia Guidote, and Samantha Cabiles. SM Skating has also played a significant role in the victory of 2017 Southeast Asian Games gold medalist, the Philippine Ice Hockey team.
