The National Finals of Red Bull Dance Your Style held on July 23, 2022 at the Bonifacio High Street Amphitheatre was a jam-packed event! It was the first time for this author to witness a dance showdown, and wow, it was an awesome experience!
The energy was high when the program started and peaked by the time it was over. It was simply a display of another profile of the Gen Z—the energetic youngsters who are passionate about dancing. Red Bull hit it right when it decided to empower the crowd by making them on-the-spot judges of the competition! The organizers gave each in the audience a set consisting of red and blue light sticks—which were used to indicate their votes for each showdown.
Street dance enjoyed the spotlight and everyone was all geared up when the equally energetic emcee introduced the 16 finalists—who were shortlisted in a series of pre-final competitions. Every contestant did his/her best and the energy they radiated was contagious.
The element of surprise was there as the two contestants to go to the showdown were randomly selected and the dance tunes were also randomly assigned. It was fun and exciting watching each one of them do their most creative and stylish moves on the dance floor to upstage the rival.
Numerous times, the emcee had to ask for a rematch because the audience seem indecisive as to whom to choose in the showdown. Preliminary round winners advanced to the next level, which pitted them again with fellow showdown winners.
In the end, a street dancer from Baguio City dominated the dance floor to win the crown and represent the Philippines at the Red Bull Dance Your Style World Finals, to be held in Johannesburg, South Africa in December this year. Mickey Yatar eclipsed Carlos ‘Taz’ Naval Jr in the final showdown, which truly brought the house down!
When asked about what he’d do next, Yatar said, “Top of my head is consulting the Top 16. They all have great ideas because some of them are my teachers and closest friends. I want to consult and gather more tips from them for my preparation.”
Red Bull also showcased the versatility of its energy drinks during the event. Bartenders concocted various cocktail drinks, alcoholic and non-alcoholic, using Red Bull Energy Drink as a base. It was a surprising discovery—realizing how fun and creative Red Bull drinks could be!
