(Press Release)
Ajinomoto Philippines Corporation (APC) Group and Meralco-owned solar company Spectrum have entered into an agreement to develop and maintain a 1-megawatt peak solar power generating facility. The initiative is part of APC Group’s efforts to reduce its Green House Gases (GHG) emissions by 50% in 2030, in pursuit of lessening its overall impact on the environment.
The venture, which is set to be launched by September 2022, aims to install 2,232 solar panel modules at Ajinomoto’s factory in Guiguinto, Bulacan to generate approximately 1,331,500 kilowatt-hours of energy per year that can offset around 865 MT equivalent carbon dioxide. This is equivalent to planting 1,950,523 trees or reducing 2,352,456 miles of in-vehicle travel per year.
“We recognize that carrying out our organization’s Sustainability roadmap requires a lot of cooperation in our entire supply chain and collaboration with able partners like Meralco and Spectrum,” said APC Group’s Associate Director and Chief Sustainability Officer Ernesto Carlos. “We would need to strike WIN-WIN partnerships for APC Group to realize our goals of contributing to the development of a sustainable society and creating economic value through prioritized initiatives.”
Globally, Ajinomoto Co., Inc. aims to realize two major outcomes in 2030—to help extend the healthy life expectancy of one billion people; and to reduce the company’s environmental impact by half while improving business performance.
APC Group has its own initiatives in contributing to the reduction of environmental footprints such as lessening plastic waste through product package size and thickness reduction; making use of facilities for wastewater treatment and converting waste to fertilizer, animal feeds, etc.; and enjoining consumers to take part in protecting the environment and enjoy living a more sustainable lifestyle through its Ilabas ang SustainAbilidad program.
Moreover, in July 2021, the APC Group formed the Sustainability Committee, whose role is to monitor, examine, and correspond to governmental policies, as well as set targets and make recommendations on the company’s prospects with a long-term view. The partnership between APC Group and Spectrum is one of the initiatives that resulted from this move.
“APC Group considers this venture as a good investment in establishing a WIN-WIN solution as both our company and the Filipino society would benefit greatly from this endeavor. This is only the beginning of more developments in this area as we continue to expand our Sustainability efforts,” said APC Group President Tsutomu Nara during the ceremonial signing event.
These initiatives reflect the Ajinomoto Group Creating Shared Value (ASV), an umbrella framework for APC Group, which aims to help resolve social issues such as environmental sustainability through thoughtful initiatives that champion the health and well-being of people, including the future generation.
