Free internet is now provided to residents of Payatas in Quezon City. The city government has recently unveiled the city’s first ‘WiKonek,’ a Freemium Community WiFi.
WiKonek, powered by Eastern Communications’ Internet Direct Service (IDS), is a collaborative initiative by the Community WiFi Advocates (CWA) consortium and the Quezon City local government unit. It offers free daily data allocation of up to 50MB—enough to facilitate browsing, messaging, e-mailing, watching videos, and/or online learning sessions. When the free data allocation is used up, a user may opt to avail added data for as low as ₱1 through the coin slot.
Quezon City government plans to install at least 1,000 WiKonek sites across the city. It will prioritize unserved, underserved, high-foot traffic, and high-density areas.
WiKonek is launched to ensure the availability and accessibility to reliable and secure access to the Internet that is suitable to QCitizens’ needs.
