Top 3 things Filipinos do after falling victim to a digital scam or fraud

What would you first do if you fall victim to an online financial scam or fraud? Experts’ logical and usual advice is to immediately call the bank or service company to report the incident.

But according to a survey commissioned by Kaspersky, most Filipinos would first of all change the passwords on their compromised bank or digital wallet accounts/apps. That is the priority of 65% of the respondents.

About 51% of the respondents said they first informed their family and friends when their accounts were compromised due to an online scam. Only 43% of the surveyed Filipinos prioritize contacting their banks, credit/debit card issuers, or e-wallet providers to report the incident.

Interestingly, the same research found that 54% of Filipino respondents are somehow confident about the safety and security of their e-bank accounts and e-wallets. Thus, they stick to digital payments to transfer cash to other people, pay for bills, and shop online.

“We can glean from this data that Filipinos draw strength from their family during a crisis, particularly where there’s the potential loss of money. This may explain why they make calls to their families and friends before anything else rather than swiftly report their circumstance to the proper authorities,” said Yeo Siang Tiong, General Manager for Southeast Asia at Kaspersky during the Kaspersky Total Security Press launch in the Philippines held virtually on February 15.

“Unfortunately, the likelihood of failing to claim the funds back plus heightened emotional stress would be higher in this scenario because of the delay in seeking help from financial institutions. This is where prevention is essential. The detection of a scam or fraud early on in the transaction means less headache for you and your family and your hard-earned money stays intact,” Yeo added.

Practicing good cyber hygiene is key to avoiding falling prey to online predators. That is on top of using a strong password, enabling security features of devices and apps, and staying away from red flags. The main way to observe cyber safety, according to Yeo, is to use reliable software protection as a preventive measure.

Kaspersky Total Security (KTS) is a premium product from the global cybersecurity vendor that offers a complete and family-oriented defense against any form of cyberthreat. KTS is bundled with a virtual private network (VPN) to make sure your online tasks are not logged, preventing hackers from possibly getting access to your emails, pictures, and even back details.

KTS is equipped with Password Manager that generates strong passwords and helps track numerous passwords that are secured in a private vault. It is protected from the prying eyes of online criminals. The Safe Money feature protects not just the user’s money but also his/her identity and privacy.
