Sun Life PH launches series of initiatives to help fight diabetes

Aligned with its relentless commitment to promoting health and wellness among Filipinos, Sun Life Philippines (Sun Life) has launched Sun Life Diabetes Corner. This initiative kicks off a series of programs by the country’s No. 1 life insurer that are aimed at bolstering the fight against diabetes, which is one of the most prevalent health issues affecting Filipinos from all walks of life, especially during the ongoing pandemic when many physical activities have been restricted.

Upon its launch, Sun Life Diabetes Corner has been integrated into the recently established Sun Life Barangay Health Stations (SLBHS), a project of the Sun Life Financial Philippines Foundation, Inc. (Sun Life Foundation). This is being piloted in Barangay Pansol in Taal, Batangas.

Barangay Pansol captain Ronelo Villanueva expressed his appreciation for choosing their community to pilot the program. “We are thankful for the support. This health program is a big help for the barangay,” he said during the virtual launch of Sun Life Diabetes Corner.

Sun Life Diabetes Corner integrates a diabetes program in SLBHS to further promote awareness and prevention through a healthier lifestyle. Through this program, basic medical services (like blood sugar screening) will be provided for pre-diabetic patients. At the same time, the information dissemination drive will be facilitated through the use of flyers and educational/informative videos. Experts will also share information about healthy diet options to help diabetics to better manage their medical condition.

“Diabetes prevention is a global advocacy for Sun Life,” said Sun Life Country Head and CEO Benedict Sison. “We remain optimistic that with proper education and access to basic medical services, patients will triumph over this debilitating illness. We are grateful for this chance to help our countrymen live healthier and brighter lives.”

As previously mentioned, Sun Life Diabetes Corner will be complemented by other programs to ensure success. The first phase of the effort will include the activation of Sun Life Wellness on Wheels, a mobile diabetes clinic that is designed to go on a caravan to other partner communities to conduct blood sugar screening, offer free consultations, and share important information.

Sun Life will also launch the SUNPIOLOGY Family Challenge, based on the iconic SUNPIOLOGY annual fun run activity. To be facilitated in collaboration with Active Healthy Kids Global Alliance, SUNPIOLOGY Family Challenge will aim to make health and wellness a shared goal among families, still in line with the fight against diabetes.

These efforts are still part of Sun Life’s current campaign ‘Partner in Health,’ which aims to encourage more fellowmen to live healthier lives for a brighter future. To learn more, check out and follow Sun Life’s social media pages on FB, IG, and Twitter (@sunlifeph).

During the program launch Q&A session, Tech and Lifestyle Journal took the opportunity to ask Dr. Marcelito Ang Lim from the Institute for Studies on Diabetes Foundation, Inc. if the consumption of non-sugar beverages and food products can help in the fight against diabetes. According to him, those consumables are safe to consume, could help prevent an increase in blood sugar, and ultimately could help avoid the onset of diabetes. He also reminded everyone to remain cautious when consuming food and drinks that can lead to increased blood sugar levels like rice and sweets.
