Twitter launches special tiger emoji to celebrate Lunar New Year 2022

Conversations about the upcoming Chinese New Year are roaring on Twitter! The microblogging site has launched a special and cute tiger emoji to celebrate the upcoming Year of the Tiger. The Lunar New Year falls on February 1 this year.

Since January 27, the exclusive emoji has been appearing alongside tweets about the Lunar New Year. Thus, it automatically appears in conversations within the platform with the hashtags #HappyNewYear, #HuatAh, or #MaligayangBagongTaon.

“From awkward conversations with our relatives to taking a vote on whether that extra piece of pineapple tart is worth the calories, Twitter is where we find out what’s happening this Lunar New Year,” Twitter Philippines said in its release sent to Tech and Lifestyle Journal.

Globally, Twitter first released its Chinese New Year emoji in 2016 as it then aimed to increase engagement during the premier holiday period in Asia, in line with its goal to be a top social media platform for celebrations. Its first-ever Lunar New Year emoji was a red envelope or hongbao, which appeared whenever designated hashtags were used in tweets.

Ironically, Twitter remains banned across mainland China. However, it hopes the annual special emojis could appeal to over a billion Chinese people who celebrate Chinese New Year around the world.
