After two months, Metro Manila is finally transitioning from a strict enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) into a slightly relaxed modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ). The national government is now allowing some businesses from specified industries to partially resume operations.
Malls are among the commercial establishments that are now allowed to operate beginning May 16, 2020. However, consumers’ shopping experience will be significantly different under the quarantine rules. This is to continuously ensure safety not just for shoppers but for retailers and their staff.
Only non-leisure shops are initially allowed to operate within malls. Those businesses must also reopen at just half their usual capacity. Restaurants may reopen but are limited to drive-through or takeout services.
All malls are requiring customers to wear face masks, undergo body temperature checks, and sanitize their hands and footwear before allowed entry. Inside the mall premises, physical distancing is also strictly imposed. Don’t be surprised to find markers on the floor to guide shoppers when observing a safe distance from each other.
Before going to any mall, don’t forget to bring your face mask and sanitizer (rubbing alcohol or hand sanitizer). Valid IDs may be asked as authorities want to make sure only people aged 21 years to 59 years will be allowed to enter malls, in line with the quarantine rules.
Not all malls in Metro Manila are set to resume operations on May 16, 2020, though. Some shopping centers of Ayala Malls and Vista Malls are set to reopen on May 18. Other malls are yet to announce their reopening dates.
Here is a comprehensive list of metro malls that have formally announced the resumption of their operations beginning May 16 and their new operating hours.
