URC donates transparent packaging films as protective barriers in hospitals

Universal Robina Corporation (URC) has found a new use for Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene (BOPP), a transparent film primarily used as a material for packaging consumer products. The packaging rolls are now used as effective barriers between patients and frontliners or healthcare workers in hospitals, amid the ongoing enhanced community quarantine to fight the spread of Covid-19.

The giant consumer goods manufacturing firm has donated BOPP films initially to three hospitals. These materials are made through a strict process facilitated by the company’s packaging division located in the province of Batangas.

“It was Dr. Maria Julieta Germar of the Philippine General Hospital’s (PGH) Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology who informed us of their department’s dire need for protective equipment,” said URC Packaging Division General Manager Ramon Agustines.

Added protection
In PGH, the BOPP films are now installed as protective barriers at the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department’s triage, examination and diagnostic areas, and operating room. URC also donated rolls of BOPP to the Batangas Municipal Health Office and the Philippine Heart Center.

Aside from the three healthcare centers, URC has also donated the same film rolls to affiliate Robinsons Bank, where the material is installed as additional protection for its frontline staff and clients. “This helps ensure that we can continue serving our customers’ banking needs,” said Robinsons Bank VP for Marketing Janette Abad Santos.

URC’s efforts
URC is planning to donate more BOPP films to some other hospitals, as part of its initiatives to help flatten the curve. In the previous weeks, URC collaborated with the Gokongwei Brothers’ Foundation in distributing basic food and beverage products to frontliners. “We will do our best to help our communities during this difficult time, not only through keeping our products available for the people we serve but also with initiatives from other parts of our value chain,” said URC President and CEO Irwin Lee.

Some of the well-loved local products manufactured by URC are Great Taste Coffee, C2 Green Tea, Magic Crackers, Jack n’Jill snacks, Baker John Breads, and Robina Farms meats and eggs.
