As it continues to carry out its mission to inspire creativity and bring joy to everyone, TikTok has pledged to donate about P14.6 million (US$300,000) to back relief and rehabilitation efforts for the victims of devastations of recent catastrophic typhoons that hit the Philippines.
The short-form mobile video app is allocating half of that donation to the Philippine Red Cross (PRC), particularly the non-profit organization’s on-ground mobilization efforts that include providing meals and other urgent necessities in affected communities.
“We stand with all Filipinos during their time of need and we want to do what we can to help all those affected get back on their feet,” TikTok said in a statement. “TikTok jas been the go-to platform for happy and inspiring moments, now we are extending this mission even beyond the app.”
Supporting Red Cross
PRC has expressed its appreciation for this support. “The Philippine Red Cross is always committed to reaching out to the helpless and to the most vulnerable,” said PRC Chairman and Senator Richard Gordon. “TikTok’s donation will surely go a long way in further strengthening PRC’s humanitarian efforts to alleviate the suffering of those who were impacted by the recent calamities. You can be sure the Red Cross will continue to be there for the people affected.”
Earlier this month, two major typhoons hit Luzon. The first was Typhoon Rolly, which was the world’s strongest typhoon so far this year. About 10 days later, Typhoon Ulysses hit Metro Manila and nearby provinces in Central Luzon. Both calamities left thousands of Filipinos homeless.
#TikTokTogetherPH
Aside from the monetary donation, TikTok is also set to host a virtual live fundraising concert on November 28, 2020 (Saturday). Dubbed as #TikTokTogetherPH, this musical event will start at 7 p.m. and will feature some of the popular local music acts like The Itchyworms, Kyline Alcantara, Mayonnaise, Rico Blanco, and Ella Cruz, among other guest artists and local content creators.
Proceeds from this virtual fundraiser will be turned over to TikTok’s other partner organizations. Those will supplement the remaining half of the company’s fund donation.
