Tech Review: HP Sprocket as a fab photo printer

HP is bringing some old joy back especially to people who still love printed photos. But sticking to its tradition of doing things differently and more excellently, the PC and printer giant is putting a new cloak to the old-school charm. That is what the HP Sprocket is all about.

Indeed, what is old has found its way to be new again. And because printers are usually not anymore among the most exciting gadgets in this era, the company has found a way to spruce things up—make the printer highly portable that it can fit a pocket!

HP Sprocket is an instant printer. It is small, reliable, and easy to use. It can complement the camera prowess of any smartphone by facilitating instant prints of pictures and memories captured on any device.

Compact design
HP has again proven that it is the authority of everything ‘compact.’ HP Sprocket is so small, it could fit any regular pocket. It is even smaller compared to most portable power banks available in the market.

Be amazed at how a printer can now possibly fit in your palm. Moreover, its cute size is complemented by an equally light weight of just about 170 grams. Plus, it has its battery built-in. This is why it would not be a problem carrying it around anytime, anywhere.

Easy to use
To facilitate printing of photos from your smartphone, pairing between HP Sprocket and any device will have to be established. There are two ways to do so. First, you could set a connection between the printer and your device via Bluetooth.

Second, it is done by downloading the free Sprocket app for iOS or Android. From the app, select a photo from your device’s gallery and start the print command. You could also edit the images through the app before printing to add filters and frames.

Fast, quality prints
Selfies could take just around 20 seconds to print, while more complex-looking pictures could be printed out in about 30 seconds. This could be considered quick considering the superior quality of print. The compact palm printer prints compact photos—with maximize size of about 2 X 3 inches per print (bigger than passport-size photos but smaller than postcard-size ones).

HP Sprocket uses a printing technology called Zink, which was developed by Polaroid in the 1990s and eventually was spun off to become Zink Imaging Co, in 2005. It uses HP Zink paper bundled in a pack comprising of 20 sheets. What’s more, each sheet of Zink paper can also instantly turn into a sticker by simply peeling off the outer layer at the back.
